CHADO – The Beauty of Japanese Tea Ceremony presents our first Japanese tea-themed online auction (9-18 October 2022), exploring the development of the Japanese tea drinking culture, from its evolution to unique cultural innovation, and later integration into the modern society.
Chadō, literally ‘the way of tea’, is one of the most iconic traditions in the Japanese cultural heritage. The ceremonial preparation and appreciation of matcha (powdered green tea) was first introduced into the country by the Song tradition of tea whisking in China. In contrary to their predecessors who later favoured the steeping of loose-leaf teas as the main stream of tea drinking, the Japanese continued to embrace the matcha tradition and further transcended their ceremonial tea ritual to bridge philosophies of inner spiritual development and concepts of harmony. The tradition of kaiseki cuisine and introduction of confectionary wagashi were also avant-garde adaptions unique to the Japanese culture.
This auction encompasses an array of tea wares and utensils related to this historical development of Japanese tea-drinking culture, featuring Chinese Song ceramics, Korean ceramics and potteries by contemporary Japanese masters. Among the two Asian private collections of Song ceramics presented in the sale, highlights include a rare Yulinting silver-painted and inscribed black-glazed temmoku bowl, a russet-splashed black-glazed 'partridge feather' bowl and a marbled clay dish from the Northern Song dynasty. The sale also features beautiful masterworks by contemporary Japanese potters and painters.
