framed: 13 by 17¼ in.; 33 by 44 cm.

The canvas remains unlined and the paint surface is in excellent condition under a clear, even varnish. The craqueleure pattern is subtle and only noticeable in raking light. The colors are vibrant and details remain lush throughout the composition. Very little restoration, if any, is visible under ultraviolet light. The painting is in excellent condition and can be presented as is. Offered in a carved giltwood frame.

Though initially trained under the history painter Gabriel-François Doyen, by 1788 Bertin became a pupil of Valenciennes, who encouraged him to instead paint idealized Italianate landscapes in the tradition of Poussin. Bertin travelled to Italy from 1806 to 1808, working on his style and developing great interest in topographical details as well as atmospheric effects. 

We are grateful to Damien Dumarquez and Jean-Louis Litron, who date the present painting to before 1815 and will be including it in their forthcoming catalogue raisonné on the artist. They believe that the composition is clearly by Bertin and that he painted much of the picture, particularly the trees and plants in the foreground, though some aspects, such as the cows, would have been delegated to members of his workshop.
