Portrait of a woman in a straw hat, three-quarter length, holding a basket of flowers and a hoe in a landscape

oil on canvas

canvas: 34¾ by 27½ in.; 88.2 by 70 cm.

framed: 44⅞ by 37½in.; 114 by 95.3 cm.

The canvas has an old glue relining and is in stable condition under a fresh, glossy varnish. The colors remain vibrant and the subtle molding of the facial features and details in the costume are particularly well-preserved. Under ultraviolet light one can see some very delicate strengthening in the background, and a few minor restorations in the figure, for example some pinpoints in the top of the forehead, along her proper right neckline, and on her wrist, though these are very minor. Overall the painting presents well and can be hung as is. Offered in a carved giltwood frame.
