oil on canvas

canvas: 24⅛ by 19¾ in.; 61.3 by 50.2 cm.

framed: 35¼ by 31¼ in.; 89.5 by 79.4 cm.

The canvas is lined and is stable and taut on its stretcher. The mage reads well through slightly darkened varnish. A thin horizontal line of loss has been repaired across the top edge that is visible to the naked eye. No other retouching or repairs are obvious to the naked eye. Under UV inspection, the varnish is milky and difficult to read through but an older campaign of small retouches scattered throughout is barely visible, mostly as dots on the man's shoulder and possibly an old repaired tear in the face of the figure. Offered in an elaborately carved giltwood frame with punchwork and nicks and losses.

The artist of this freely executed head study has not been identified, but it has the casual pose and expression of a self-portrait of the artist. It was possibly used as a model for male figure in a larger history painting composition.
